Is It Actually Silver?
Ethiopian silver contains absolutely no silver! The “silver” is actually aluminium. The beads have an imperfect, very obviously handcrafted appearance, which is the core of their beauty and charm. You can see that someone handmade them, they are not machine-made, mass-produced items.
As you can see, they have imperfections, they have cracks, they have joins…..
How The Beads Are Made
The majority of these beads are made in small farm villages. The metal is obtained from old pots and pans, and sometimes bullet casings. The assorted metal is melted down over a bed of hot coals, the old-fashioned way! Artisans then create the beads by hand.
Ethiopian Silver at Big Skies Jewellery
I’ve had a couple of large chunky Ethiopian Silver beads in my bead stock for quite some time. This is because I’ve been waiting for the right semi precious stones to combine them with. When I found these big glossy turquoise howlite beads I knew they would be the perfect fit. They have very pronounced striking black striations, which are enhanced by the black tourmaline focal bead. The black tourmaline is a totally raw crystal nugget. Its natural ruggedness matches the imperfectly perfect handcrafted Ethiopian silver beads! The overall effect is strongly tribal.
